Major Projects

Helping Prepare for Ontario's Energy Future

To help meet Ontario's electricity needs, OPG has embarked on a major campaign to increase its capacity through new generation projects. OPG acts as project manager on these initiatives, contracting with third party firms who assume much of the risk for constructing the projects on time and on budget. Information on some of our larger projects is provided below.

The Niagara Tunnel


140 metres under the city of Niagara Falls, OPG is building the worlds largest hard rock tunnel that will supply enough water to generate 1.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.

Refurbishment Study


OPG is currently assessing the feasibility of refurbishing the Pickering B nuclear generating station for life extension and continued operation to 2050 - 2060.

Nuclear New Build


Ontario Power Generation has submitted to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission a project description for potential new nuclear generating units on the same site as Darlington Nuclear.

The DGR


OPG has proposed the construction and operation of a Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for the long-term storage of low and intermediate level nuclear waste.
