Q: What’s going to happen to OPG’s coal-fired generating stations?
A: OPG will continue to operate its coal-fired stations in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner until they are no longer needed.
We will also make additional, prudent investments in environmental equipment and systems to further improve their environmental performance.
Q: Will OPG be building a new nuclear station?
A: OPG has been asked by the Ontario Government to begin the federal approvals process including an environmental assessment, for new nuclear units at an existing facility. We have begun that work, and have been meeting with the regulatory and approvals agencies to ensure we understand all of the requirements.
OPG has not been asked to begin construction of a new nuclear station. Construction cannot begin until a site preparation license and a construction license have been obtained from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). A pre-requisite is the completion of an environmental assessment. However OPG believes that its Darlington site is the best location for a new-build facility. Darlington has a highly qualified work force and enjoys strong community support and was the best performing multi-unit nuclear station in Canada in 2004 and 2005.
