Towards a Cleaner Energy Future

OPG’s Darlington nuclear site has been selected by the Government of Ontario as the location for Ontario’s next nuclear generating facility. OPG is proud to have been selected as the operator of this new facility. It will be the first new nuclear station to be built in Ontario in more than 15 years.
News Release |
The Darlington nuclear site is approximately 480 hectares (1,186 acres) in size, located in the
Municipality of Clarington, Ontario. The site is large enough to accommodate up to four additional reactors and is adjacent to a major transmission corridor with good access to a major load centre.
The host community of Clarington and the Region of Durham have both expressed their strong support for this project. OPG has developed and maintained a good working relationship with our neighbours and the municipal and regional governments. OPG has the support of Durham's business sector. Our employees, working with partners in the business, training and education fields, are leaders in the development of the Durham energy sector and business communities. OPG is recognized as a strong corporate citizen within Durham Region for the company and employee contributions and commitment to the well-being of the community. Through the environmental assessment, OPG is ensuring members of the public have an opportunity to make their voice heard. Click here to find out how you can get involved.
OPG has extensive operating experience to draw on, having begun studying the site, the surrounding lands and waters in the 1970s. OPG also has a highly skilled workforce, with a track record of more than 35 years of safe and reliable nuclear performance while protecting the environment, workers and members of the public. OPG has invested in education and training through the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and Durham College as well as significant in-house training programs to ensure a sustained workforce of highly skilled and trained employees for the future.
The completion of a federal environmental assessment (EA) is required before the issuance of any licence for a new nuclear plant. The EA must conclude that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects given available mitigation measures. The EA will include assessments of the environmental impact of alternative reactor technologies, condenser cooling, waste management and site layout considerations at the Darlington site. It also includes a comprehensive public consultation program.
