ONTARIO POWER GENERATION SUPPORTS CLARINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY IN HONOUR OF 'A CENTURY OF POWERING ONTARIO'
[DURHAM] - In celebration of 'A Century of Powering Ontario', Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has contributed 100 titles for 100 years to the Clarington Public Library.
In 1906, the Government of Ontario passed The Power Commission Act creating the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario and thus established the basis for the electricity industry in Ontario. This year, OPG joined other electricity agencies across Ontario to mark 100 years of operation.
"OPG Darlington Nuclear is making a contribution that will last well beyond the celebration year," says Darlington's Deputy Vice President Wayne Robbins. "The contribution of 100 new titles to the Clarington Public Library system will introduce books covering a range of subjects, focusing primarily on environment, stewardship, electricity generation, and conservation. The books will be of interest to a wide-range of ages and audiences."
"We are very pleased that our celebration in 2006 can include all residents of Clarington, who will have access to the books. Partnering with the library was a perfect fit, as they are truly an agency devoted to education and are inclusive of all residents of Clarington. As well, it allowed OPG Darlington to further support the community in areas of importance to all of us - environment and education."
At a ceremony on Wednesday, December 6, at the Clarington Public Library's Bowmanville Branch, Mr. Robbins was pleased to make the official contribution to Edith Hopkins, CEO, Clarington Public Library, Allan Hewitt, Library Board Chair, and Brenda Carrigan, Vice Chair.
"The library is thrilled to receive this generous donation from OPG", Ms. Hopkins stated. "As the informational heart of this community we always strive to build our collections to better serve residents, and these additional titles support this mission."
The Clarington Public Library system serves approximately 80,000 residents through its four branch locations and its website at www.clarington-library.on.ca. Each book will include an inscription on the inside cover, acknowledging it as a gift as part of the province-wide celebration.
