Thermal Power

NOW GENERATING

MEGAWATTS
of Thermal Energy

Ontario Power Generation operates five thermal stations with a combined capacity of about 8,177 megawatts (MW). Four of these stations are fuelled by coal. The fifth, Lennox Generating Station is dual fuelled by oil and natural gas.

Atikokan Station
Capacity: 211 MW

Nanticoke Station
Capacity: 3,640 MW

Lambton Station
Capacity: 1,920 MW

Thunder Bay Station
Capacity: 306 MW

Lennox Station
Capacity: 2,100 MW

OPG's thermal stations' role is to generate electricity, complementing generation produced by lower cost nuclear and hydroelectric facilities. Thermal stations provide a flexible source of energy and can operate as baseload, intermediate and peaking facilities depending on the needs of the electricity system.

Their production is determined by electricity demand, price and the availability of nuclear, hydroelectric, and other non-OPG generators.

Environmental Responsibility
In response to Ontario Government regulation, OPG will phase out the use of coal to produce electricity by the end of 2014.

For as long as they operate, OPG will meet all environmental regulations that pertain to these plants.
